The Merano basin, Hochmuth and Tyrol Castle bring mountain scenery and South Tyrolean history together.

Merano and the mountains above

Hochmuth provides access to the Texel Group above the Merano basin. Mutspitze is a further summit objective requiring sure-footedness and suitable planning, rather than a casual stroll from the cable car.

History at Tyrol Castle

Built around 1100 as the ancestral seat of the Counts of Tyrol, Tyrol Castle gave the region its name. The castle and county passed to the Habsburgs in 1363. Today, the castle near Dorf Tirol houses the South Tyrol Museum of Culture and Provincial History.

The wider history includes the Tyrolean uprising of 1809 under Andreas Hofer against Bavarian rule and Napoleonic troops. Initial successes were followed by defeat; Hofer was executed in Mantua in 1810. During the war years, Tyrol Castle was looted and auctioned. Later restoration shaped its present appearance.
